Renato Adams Interview "I want to be the next police commissioner"

Renato Adams interview on CVM's Direct. He talks about the outgoing police commissioner, the temporary one and what Jamaica needs to solve its crime problem.

I reserve further comments on the interview, but I think it is definitely worth watching!

I believe that Renato did raise an interesting point regarding how we can resolve the corruption problem. The current approach to corruption prevention has been too passive and the government needs to take a more active approach. I agree that too much emphasis is being placed on establishing a separate unit that is dedicated to solving the corruption problem. Such an approach will allow the corrupt police officers within the force to participate in the dealings of this unit. This will in effect defeat the purpose of the unit and we will be back to square one. We cannot allow the individuals that promote corruption in the force to work their way around efforts to weed them out of the system.

What solution can be proposed?
My answer to this question will be along the same line of reasoning as Renato. The focus should be taken away from the separate corruption prevention unit. Instead, we should focus on making the current constabulary force more efficient. When the constabulary force system is more efficient, the inefficiencies-the corrupt cops- of the system will automatically be revealed. Accordingly, the government will have to manipulate these inefficiencies until they become efficient and if they do not have the capacity to do so, they have to be removed from the system. The government has to take an approach to resolving the corruption problem in a way that gives the so called inefficiencies no choice but to shape up or ship out.

Although Renato does have some good points, I believe that he still would not be a very good candidate. Renato is reminiscent of an "old dog" who would claim to change his ways but find out that it would be harder said than done. I believe that the position for police commissioner needs to be assumed by a capable individual that can bring a fresh and innovative perspective on methods of managing corruption and lowering the crime rate. Renato mentioned that reason for the corruption problem can be attributed to the fact that the example is not being set from the top of the totem pole. If Renato is put at the top, he would not set the right example for cops that would look to him as a role model.
